This movie has some vivid battle scenes, but also suffers from a number of historical inaccuracies. It features T-34-85 tanks, which only appeared in the Red Army in 1944, post-war Ural trucks, as well as BTR-40 light armored personnel carriers, which were used to portray German vehicles, but which were, in fact, first manufactured in the Soviet Union in the 1950s.
This movie is a retelling of a confrontation in the summer of 1943 between a T-34 tank under the command of Alexander Menshov and a German tank ace. This duel became a kind of a forerunner of one of the largest tank battles in history - the Battle of Prokhorovka.
At the very start of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, a motley group of random people, consisting of a shell-shocked sergeant, a cadet, a street kid and a physics teacher, stumble upon a KV-2 heavy tank abandoned by its crew. All four come up with a bold and crazy idea to go to war with the enemy in this tank.
The filmmakers tried to recreate that historic event with maximum accuracy. They scouted museums for restored Soviet T-34 and KV-1 as well as German Pz. V Panther tanks. The filming took place near Mozhaysk in Moscow Region, where heavy fighting for the Soviet capital took place in 1941.
For greater entertainment value, the film creators decided to add to the plot a group of German saboteurs and even a gang of White Guards hiding in the woods since the Civil War. Their task is to prevent Koshkin and his T-34 from reaching Moscow and, thus, prevent the Red Army from getting this new and powerful tank.
Sergeant Major Zack Carey (James Garner) made the mistake of being chivalrous in Clemmons, GA. He simply couldn't ignore Deputy Euclid (James Cromwell) beating on the local prostitute. But how was he to know that some bruises on a deputy would so deeply offend the sheriff? Well, that it did and Sheriff Buelton (G.D. Spradlin) is not a very forgiving or even reasonable man.Sheriff Buelton wanted Carey's hide and when he couldn't get it he had to devise another method of payback. So, he went about planting marijuana in Carey's son's locker. In the small county of Clemmons, GA where the sheriff calls all the shots, that equaled a ticket to jail and whatever else Buelton wanted to do to Billy (C. Thomas Howell).Carey realized he was defeated and was ready to pay the piper but his wife, LaDonna (Shirley Jones) opted for another resolution. Ole Buelton didn't like the wife's resolution so he fast tracked Billy right to a work labor camp where his safety was a complete toss up.By this time Sergeant Major Carey had had enough and it was time to get tough. Time to break out the Sherman Tank. This was a cool movie. At times it was serious and at times it was light. It seemed like whenever real shooting was taking place it was a bit light. They didn't want to kill anybody. When it came to Boss Hogg aka Sheriff Buelton getting his just desserts then it was serious. There was nothing light about his heavy-handed, backwards, racist, and redneck approach to the law. He made a perfect antagonist. He was so easy to hate and root against it made Carey's plight that much more appealing. It was hard to know what year all of this was taking place the sheriff was so confident, reckless, and dismissive of the law. He was the law and well beyond arrests and charges. It was like he ran Georgia! The trouble Carey was dragged into because he had a heart for a hooker didn't even add up. It was like he rekindled the North v. the South. The moral of the story--what the seasoned rapper E-40 once preached:Don't save a ho'.The next thing you know your sons is in prison on some false charges and you're trying to drive a tank across state lines.
This movie begins with an Army Command Sergeant Major named "Zack Carey" (James Garner) relocating to a new assignment somewhere in Georgia. What makes Zack so unusual is that during the course of his military career he has managed to build a Sherman tank from scratch and he is taking it with him to his new post. Although this is his last tour of duty he soon discovers that he is not destined to retire in peace as a brawl at a nightclub puts him and his entire family in the sights of an evil law enforcement official by the name of "Sheriff Buelton" (G. D. Spradlin). However, what Sheriff Buelton fails to take into account is that, even though he has a great deal of authority in the local area, it isn't wise to bully a man like like CSM Carey too far--especially when he has a Sherman tank at his disposal. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that, even though this picture was a minor success when it first came out, having seen it again just recently I must admit that the film itself is rather uneven and hasn't improved with age. Yet despite its obvious flaws, it's still entertaining to a certain degree and because of that I have rated it accordingly. Average.
Command Sergeant Major Zack Carey (James Garner) takes up a new post at an Army base. He brings along his wife (Shirley Jones), his son Billy (C. Thomas Howell), and his Sherman tank. The Army lifer is looking to finish up after this posting to retire early despite the promise of a promotion. All he wants is to buy a boat and spend more time with his remaining son. By day, he's whipping his men into shape. By night, he's drinking at the local bars. One night, he gets into a fight with corrupt local deputy sheriff Euclid Baker (James Cromwell) who was slapping around prostitute Sarah (Jenilee Harrison). Corrupt sheriff Cyrus Buelton (G. D. Spradlin) has no jurisdiction on the Army base so the cops plant drugs on Billy and have him arrested. This is a forgettable 80's flick most notable for an inanimate object. There is limited tension. It's all generally bland. You know what could be better with the inciting incident. The movie could inject more personal stakes by having a racist deputy harass his black Army comrade. It would attack him personally and morally. As it stands, it's morally defensible to hit the deputy but it's more reasonable to protect Sarah without striking back. Another way to do this is for Sarah to tell him about the corrupt town and Zack to take up the cause. At the end of the day, the most compelling aspect of this movie is a tank destroying stuff. Everything else is a bland forgettable drama.
That is my opinion of course. I noticed before sitting down to watch Tank Girl that it has got a bad reputation for being a Hollywoodised bastardisation of the cult comic. As someone who has a lot of fondness for the comic and as an admirer of Malcolm McDowell, I found Tank Girl neither a good or terrible movie. More the disappointing but sort of watchable neck of the woods.I do give it plaudits for the colourful visuals, the upbeat soundtrack and decent performances from most of the cast. Lori Petty does have some cringe-worthy one-liners but I did find her surprisingly credible, and while Ice-T has some irritating moments he has moments where he is also fun. The best performances however come from Naomi Watts and especially Malcolm McDowell who is over-the-top but in an enjoyable way. However, the script is pretty awful. The one-liners are enough to make you cringe, the humour is stale and it also lacked the sassy black-humoured feel of the comic. The story has a great concept but for me suffered from being too unevenly paced(mostly rushed) and predictable with many moments of dumbness, a couple of limply paced scenes such as the musical scene at the Rippers' base and a few too many moments where it steers off track.Characters are a mixed bag. Tank Girl and Kesslee are fun enough, but Jet and Sub Girls are not as interesting personality-wise as they were in the comics and the Rippers more often than not are annoying. Another big disappointment is the direction, which is flashy but also too muddled, never knowing whether it is trying to handle a satire, comedy or futuristic action. Consequently the black, sassy humour could have benefited the satire and the comedy, but seeing as they were missing the humour to me seemed flat, and the more action-like parts looked clunky.Overall, I was willing to judge it on its own terms and to form my own opinion, but while I don't think Tank Girl is as bad as people say and I have seen far worse movies there wasn't really anything especially outstanding about it. 4/10 Bethany Cox
The world has been devastated by a comet and most of the water is gone. Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell) and the Water & Power Corporation control 95% of the remaining water. Rippers are mysterious mutants killing and pillaging without leaving a trace. Rebecca Buck (Lori Petty) live in a small isolated community. W&P attacks and Rebecca is taken prisoner. She befriends scared mechanic Jet Girl (Naomi Watts). They try to use Rebecca as bait for the Rippers. Jet Girl musters up the courage and steals the jet to join her. She steals a tank and becomes Tank Girl. They discover that her young friend Sam was sent to work in the sex club Liquid Silver. After a failed rescue, Tank Girl and Jet Girl stumble upon the Rippers' hideout. They turn out to be mutated kangaroo-human supersoldiers.Tank Girl may be the lead but I love Jet Girl. Lori Petty is possibly the perfect Tank Girl. She has the great irreverent energetic wildness. This is a campy comic book movie. It doesn't get campier than kangaroo hybrids but this movie won't be restrained by that. It is broadly amateurish and unrelenting cheesy. It's no masterpiece but it's awkwardly fun. Jet Girl does put this over the top for me and it's probably the first film I noticed Naomi Watts. It's likely years later that I realized that it was Naomi Watts after she got big. It also has some good music. There is simply nothing like this movie. 2ff7e9595c
